Major Cloud Services outages are becoming common place. The trend really started back in 2016, when massive cyber attacks targeting Amazon AWS took down huge portions of the internet, including services like NetFlix, Twitter, Amazon, etc.. Today, major cloud outages are common place, with almost 20 such serious outages being recorded in 2023, and that trend is continuing and escalating in frequency and severity in 2024.

So many big brands have become reliant on these hyperclouds, that effectively they have become a single point of failure for many organizations IT infrastructure and critical services delivery. A targeted attack against Amazon AWS can take down millions of organizations. A bad software update by Microsoft Azure can take down critical services and millions of users and organizations. For huge corporations, with massive budgets and teams, this is workable to a certain degree. They can continually invest more and more into their AWS or Azure architecture and design and work to bi-pass such issues or minimize their impact moving forward.

For the average SMB, Mid Market or Small Enterprise type of customer, the hyperclouds are becoming an untenable solution for their organizations. Often times lacking an adequate amount of inhouse resources &/or budget, along with a lack of any real support from the cloud vendors themselves, these organizations are at the mercy of these major cloud services providers if/when issues arise. Even organizations who have aligned with Azure or AWS partners or Managed Service Providers (MSP’s), are still ultimately at the mercy of the underlying infrastructure providers.

My own company (www.cartika.com) and companies like us have resisted moving our infrastructure and customers to the major hypercloud providers. Preferring instead to run our own infrastructure in commercially available Tier3+ to Tier4 datacenters. We are consistently delivering higher service uptimes, lower frequency of serious issues and faster/simpler recovery from service impacting issues when they do occur. With greater separation of customers within datacenters, and greater separation between customers within a specific providers footprint within datacenters, issues, when they occur, tend to occur less often, be less severe and impact less users for shorter periods of time. Whereas with these massive hypercloud providers, you often see entire datacenters go offline, and millions of users impacted for prolonged periods of time. Sometimes, as was the case with this most recent Azure issue, a single issue caused global level outages. I just don’t see how this approach is palatable for the typical business any longer. We do not have a single service reliant on the major cloud providers. All of our customers did not experience a single second of downtime today, or during any of the other serious outages seen on the major platforms over the last few years. As the CFO of one of our key customers told us today – reached out to me personally to tell me this – when they were previously on Azure, this sort of outage would have shut down production in all 8 of our factories. $100’s of $1000’s of dollars in direct losses each and every time they had Azure problems for the day. The indirect costs are incalculable. Their business just could not survive if these scenarios kept occurring.

Far too many organizations made the push to the massive hyperclouds – for what apparently was no other reason than everyone else is on AWS and Azure, we should be too. But, with the strain on resources, financial pressures and pressures to deliver quality and reliability of services being at an all time high, I think its becoming irresponsible for the typical mid market business to be relying on providers like AWS and Azure. I would expect more and more businesses to once again seek out high value services powered by smaller more niche providers, at significantly lower total cost of ownership, with a proven history of better reliability, uptime and performance – not too mention lower costs and significantly better overall value and higher levels of day to day support – as compared to the mega cloud providers. It is quickly becoming the only rational path forward for the typical mid market business.

The recent regulation in the EU law entitled “General Data Protection Regulation,” (known as GDPR) is an extensive set of privacy regulations dictating the rights of EU citizens to understand what personal information is held by companies, what they use the information for, along with the ability to delete their personal information from companies databases. It is also a set of regulations which mandates how companies must adhere to the above rights of EU citizens, and also, in our case, some pretty explicit guidelines with how data services, which deliver, serve and/or store personal data need to be handled. Fortunately, for Cartika and our customers, we are a Canadian based organization, which has been required to operate under a similar Personal Information Protection and Electronics Document Act (known as PIPEDA), for a significant period of time. Between GDPR and more stringent PIPEDA requirements coming May 25th and June 1st 2018 respectively, Cartika was amply prepared to meet and exceed such requirements for all of our customers – both in how we handle and use customers personal information, as well as, with the data services we deliver to our customers and their respective environments.

As such, when we as Cartika, discuss privacy and compliance, we need to separate this discussion into 2 segments.

1) How we handle our customer’s personal data and how compliance is met with respect to our business and our direct relationships with customers. Having already operated under PIPEDA for years, with respect to the handling of customer’s personal data, we consider ourselves well ahead of the curve and have been, and continue to meet and exceed any privacy legislation which currently exists, including GDPR. However, GDPR has some specific requirements to allow users to view the personal data we have stored for each customer, the purpose for storing the data, the ability to download a copy of such data, and lastly, the ability to delete themselves from our systems completely. As much as this is possible and legal (where in Canada, for tax purposes, we are required to store 7 years of financial data and simply cannot just delete such data and even basic identifying data to remain compliant with the Canadian Tax laws), we have implemented a self-serve option within our accounts portal to facilitate every GDPR requirement. Here at Cartika, we have operated under the most stringent privacy legislation and policies which have ever existed for almost 20 years. We do not limit privacy protection based on customer’s geography and citizenship, instead, we provide the maximum level of privacy legislatively required anywhere in the world, to all of our customers by default. Customers from ANY country (and not just the EU), can now access their accounts portal (accounts.cartika.com), navigate to accounts tab > overview – and as per screen capture below, can see a detailed list of their personal data, the purpose and usage for that data, download a copy of the report, and lastly, delete their data and profile from our systems completely. Please note, we cannot form a business relationship with a person or organization who does not provide basic personal information for the purposes of account management and billing, and as such, anyone requesting that their personal information be deleted from our systems must a) have an account in good standing with no open/unpaid invoices and b) must terminate any services we are providing.

GDPR compliant infrastructure management

2) How we provide compliance with infrastructure and managed services that customers have contracted to Cartika. All Cartika customers, with Proactive or higher levels of management, are completely covered with respect to GDPR/PIPEDA compliance in their respective environments. Managing firewalls, backup, and recovery, endpoint security and AV systems, our recently announced Big Data and Machine Learning based analytics, graphical display and notifications capabilities and our Access Management layers. Cartika customers and their environments, managed by Cartika, are fully GDPR and PIPEDA compliant as of today. It is a hard GDPR and PIPEDA requirement that organizations must also address the portions of GDPR and PIPEDA which relate to your own business and internal operations (similar to what I outlined in point #1 above). Cartika customers on pure IaaS, self-managed environments are “ready” from a GDPR & PIPEDA perspective, but, it’s the expectation that such customers are managing the technology required for compliance as well as handling personal data and related compliance requirements on systems themselves.

As a result of the above, Cartika is in the process of restructuring all of our offerings to meet the reality we and our customers are facing today and moving forward. Our offerings will be presented by service level (pure IaaS, Proactive Managed to cover GDPR/PIPEDA and other personal privacy protection laws which may arise in the future and advanced compliance for HIPAA & SOX/FISMA). Our pure IaaS offering allows customers to simply purchase resources from us, and manage their own environments and compliance. However, for customers who require a plug and play, managed offering that ensures compliance with GDPR & PIPEDA, our newly positioned proactive management offerings will accommodate this out of the box.

Cartika pricing for respective service levels will be rising here in the near future, however, as always, Cartika will include all of the above value to our existing customers, without altering the price of any existing service levels for any of our customers. It is our existing customers which have allowed us to build and grow this business, and have allowed us to build and develop the tools required to take us into the future. As a thank you, to ALL existing Cartika proactive or higher managed customers, your pricing for all existing services will remain the same and will be grandfathered for as long as those services are active. We will also work with such customers, on a case by case basis, and are absolutely willing to negotiate and meet in the middle between your existing rates, and our new rates for new services implementations you may be planning.

Lastly, and worth mentioning, I wanted to bring up the subject of our legacy shared hosting customers. These are services we have not offered for quite some time now. As these compliance requirements become more and more strict, and more and more countries introduce such requirements, it’s imperative we move our business and our offerings forward into the future. We simply are not able to provide compliance in shared environments moving forward (however Cartika customers can provide shared environments to their customers under our proactive management and remain compliant with GDPR and PIPEDA). Unlike most other organizations, we refuse to simply “Sell Off” our legacy shared hosting business, as without these customers, over all of these years, we simply would not be where we are today. We recognize that and want to thank our shared hosting customers for the years and years of being loyal customers. Cartika was always a more expensive provider for your shared hosting requirements. You did not choose us because we were cheaper than the next company. Our legacy shared hosting customers specifically chose to pay significantly more money to have their data and services with Cartika – recognizing the value we brought at our price point. For these customers, and as a THANK YOU from Cartika, I would ask you to come along with us into the future. We will ask you to pay a little more than you are today, but for that little more, you will be on your own proactively managed virtual environment, and off of shared hosting. You will have full compliance with GDPR, PIPEDA and any other privacy legislation which may arise in the future. As a THANK YOU from Cartika, this will cost you significantly less than any of our other customers are paying and much less than any future customer will be paying. After years of paying the premium to be a Cartika customer and receive our hosting services and support, your reward is to move with us into the future, and pay much less than anyone, anywhere else, for a plug and play, managed, isolated and compliant environment.

Our recently restructured IaaS cloud server platform was the result of our fifteen year legacy of pioneering new managed application and web hosting services. During this time, we have constantly worked with clients to determine how to best meet their most demanding IT challenges. We have also remained keenly aware of how competitors have been approaching the market as it has evolved. Rather than follow the trend of many in the market who sell inclusive, “all or nothing” cloud services, we want to provide our partners and clients with options. Our innovative idea is remarkably simple and timely – let people buy what they actually want, instead of charging for bundled services they don’t need. We do this by using a multi-tiered model that provides the flexibility, performance and support every good cloud solution should have – without the limitations and restrictions found with many other vendors. To complement our new flavor of IaaS services, we also provide a robust Backup-as-a-Service solution. It’s seamlessly woven into our existing modular add-ons, including the Cartika Backup-as-a-Service platform, no-fuss load balancing, and a range of server management choices. We are pleased to announce two significant new enhancements to our IaaS cloud server platform – both based on direct feedback from our customers. First, partners and clients now have the ability to load their own ISOs and directly boot VMs from them. This greatly improves flexibility when migrating between non-homogenous Hypervisor (HV) platforms. It also lets users customize and personalize their installs, and easily perform traditional Bare Metal Restores (BMRs) on our virtualized platform. The second major upgrade is that we’ve added integrated SSH key support that lets customers to upload their SSH keys and install them on any VM within their account. This enables more efficient management of VMs for System Administrators and other IT personnel. It also streamlines management procedures and enables the seamless expansion of a client’s footprint into our cloud without changing their existing processes. And There’s Still More to Come! As we continue to look ahead and evolve, many other new capabilities have been added to our product roadmap. The first one coming very soon is support for full client area APIs, including robust API integrations into our IaaS platform. This will allow users to programmatically manage their footprint across the entire Cartika account. Client area APIs will provide significant benefits for our partners as well – making it extremely easy for them to sell, provision and configure VMs for their clients using existing portals and systems. In the near future, we are looking to further enhance our Backup-as-a-Service software to allow VM migrations from non-homogenous HV platforms to Cartika’s IaaS platform. A little further down the road, we also have plans to expand storage infrastructure tiers and add functionality to perform replication between facilities. Our continued goal is to offer partners and customers more choice and flexibility so they can leverage our environment to meet their exact needs. We are structuring our services to adapt to the core IT processes used by our clients – not the other way around!

When we think about artificial intelligence, what comes to mind is usually none-too-friendly fictional examples like HAL and the machines from The Matrix, although there are some more friendly AIs, like Data from Star Trek. Friendly or not, we’re a long way from having functional AIs of this type, but over the next few years, most of us are going to be relying on a narrow sort of AI: AIs capable of organizing a limited subset of data in useful ways. The push towards artificially intelligent personal assistants will be driven by the ubiquity of smart mobile devices, made possible by the deluge of data delivered by the Internet of Things, and have tremendous impact on many different fields, including healthcare, planning, business organization, collaboration, and leisure. An example most people will be familiar with is Google Now: a smart virtual assistant on Android devices that uses Google’s insight into many different areas of our life to preemptively populate its interface with information that we’ll find useful at that moment. Because Google has access to our location, our email, and our history, the company is able to integrate that information in intelligent ways. That ability to integrate many different sources of information in ways that help us move around the world and do our jobs is at the crux of narrow artificial intelligence. A typical example from Google Now is travel information: the app knows where you are from GPS data, it knows where you want to be because it has access to your calendar, it knows how to get there because it has detailed mapping and public transport data, and it knows how long the journey will take because it can access traffic and weather data. All of that can be intelligently combined into a single card that says: “You should leave in the next ten minutes if you want to arrive at your appointment on time.” As ever more sensor-equipped devices are connected to the Internet, ever more data will be produced from a dizzying array of sources. To make that information useful, multiple streams must be integrated and contextualized — a great opportunity for developers and vendors of developer services alike, including cloud vendors. Google Now is just one example. As Forbes writer Peggy Anne Salz points out, investor interest in narrow AI applications is growing. Applications like Sunrise, Lowdown and Charlie are focused on integrating and contextualizing the flood of information that’s available, helping users offload day-to-day cognitive loads onto devices and services. As interest in narrow-AI applications grows, and the number of developers seeking to leverage the increased volume of data available to them, cloud vendors who are well placed to provide the scalable infrastructure contextual applications require will benefit considerably from new and exciting opportunities.
